Scientific Analysis of Ancient Goryeo Paper Fiber Raw Materials and Research on Related Issues
The ancient Korean Peninsula once produced the famous Goryeo paper, due to its pure white and tough texture, the paper was highly sought after by literati during the Ming and Qing dynasties and was widely used in Qing palace architecture. In recent years, some scholars have mistakenly believed that the raw material for Goryeo paper was mulberry bark. This study used fiber staining microscopy analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal decomposition gas chromatograph to analyze the fiber composition of several ancient Goryeo paper, modern Hanji, and North Korean paper samples, and compared them with the records of ancient books in China and the Korean Peninsula,as well as the relevant information on modern Korean handmade paper. The results showed that the raw material of Goryeo paper had always been made of kozo bark. The statement about mulberry bark was likely to be incorrect.
