Changes in the inner ear microenvironment caused by bacterial infection of the middle ear are the main cause for inner ear damage in otitis media. This article reviews the literature of clinical and basic research on the impact of middle ear bacterial infection on the inner ear published in recent years, and summarizes the main types of bacterial infection in otitis media, characteristics of associated hearing loss, the way middle ear infection spreads to the inner ear,and subsequent changes in the inner ear immune microenvironment,as well as interventions for inner ear damage caused by middle ear bacterial infection,to facilitate research on its mechanisms and management.
