Abstract
Objective To pilot-test a rapid assessment procedure of injection safety;to collect semi-quantitative and qualitative information on knowledge, attitude and practices regarding injections among healthcare workers;and to estimate the proportion of harmless injections. Methods Standardized questionnaires, focus group discussions and direct observations were used to collect semi-quantitative and qualitative information among injection prescribers, providers, and paramedical workers who handled healthcare waste. Results An mean of 35.2% patients were prescribed injections by physicians. 47.8% prescriptions contained at least one injection. One nurse administerted an average of 90. 9 injections per week. 75% interviewed nurses reported sharps injuries during the last 12 months. One nurse dispensed 32 patients per day averagely;73.4 % patients received at least one injection. Conclusion Injections are popular in Shanghai. Disposable syringes and needles have been universally accepted by practitioners and patients. A number of elements suggest that healthcare workers may contribute to injection overuse.
