Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease characterized by synovial inflammation, joint damage, and high titers of autoantibodies. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which plaque microorganisms act as initiating factors and cause the destruction of periodontal supporting tissues. The main features were alveolar bone resorption, periodontal pocket formation, progressive attachment loss, tooth loosening and tooth loss. Periodontitis and RA are multifactorial diseases characterized by chronic inflammation leading to tissue and bone destruction around teeth or joints, respectively. In recent years, the relationship between RA and periodontitis has been the focus for domestic and foreign scholars . Although studies have found a close correlation between RA and periodontitis, the underlying mechanisms of their relationship are still unclear. This paper reviews the research progress on the correlation and possible mechanisms between periodontitis and RA in epidemiology and clinical research, bacterial factors, genetic factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, environmental factors, and treatment.
