Comparison of shaping ability of two new nickel titanium rotary system to molars based on micro-computed tomography in the elderly
Objective To compare the effectiveness of two new rotary nickel-titanium systems,ProTaper Next and WaveOne Gold,with the conventional nickel-titanium system,ProTaper Universal,in the preparation of curved root canals in older molar teeth.Methods Thirty molars(96 canals)were divided into 3 experimental groups and instrumented using the ProTaper Universal system(PTU group),WaveOne Gold system(WOG group),and ProTaper Next system(PTN group)up to # 25.The root canals were scanned and reconstructed using micro-computed tomography(CT)before and after preparation.Measurements were taken to compare the preparation time,changes in volume and surface area before and after preparation,and center shifts at five levels between the two groups.Results The WOG group had a shorter preparation time(61.0±7.1)s,compared to the PTN group(135.0± 8.4)s and the PTU group(259.0±8.4)s(F=11.553,P=0.007).After root canal preparation,the volume of canals in all three groups significantly increased.The PTU group had the largest increase in volume(6.794±2.430)mm3,followed by the WOG group(4.997±2.260)mm3 and the PTN group(4.554±1.988)mm3,with statistical significance(F=2.673,P=0.022).The surface area of the WOG group,PTN group and PTU group increased by(17.397±6.445)mm2,(17.370±6.768)mm2 and(18.907±6.545)mm2,respectively.However,the difference in surface area was not statistically significant(F=0.063,P=0.805).There was no significant difference in canal center transportation among the three groups(all P>0.05).In the third horizontal section,the PTU group had a higher canal center transportation[(0.103±0.028)mm]compared to the PTN group[(0.071±0.016)mm]and WOG group[(0.087±0.025)mm](F=8.007,P=0.005).Conclusions The ProTaper Next and WaveOne Gold systems,which are made of nickel-titanium,offer a faster and safer method for preparing root canals in elderly molars.These systems not only reduce the preparation time but also minimize the center deviation in the middle section of the root canal,thereby enhancing efficiency and safety.
