Current status and related factors of regular exercise in elderly patients on maintenance hemodialysis
Objective To investigate the status of regular exercise in elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients and analyze related influencing factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted enrolling 202 elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients from the blood purification department of the first affiliated hospital of Xi'an jiaotong university.A scale for physical activity stage distribution was used to investigate the stage of motor behavior of patients, the exercise benefits/barriers scale was used to investigate the motor cognition of dialysis patients, and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support was used to measure the degree of social support of patients. The patients were divided into a regular exercise group and a non-regular exercise group according to the stage of their movement behavior, and related influencing factors of regular exercise were analyzed. Results Among 202 elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients,74(36.6%)had regular exercise behavior, while 128(63.4%)did not show regular exercise behavior.Univariate analysis revealed that age(x2=5.239,P=0.022),marital status(x2=7.920,P=0.005),education level(x2=15.156,P=0.001),motor cognition(t=9.79,P<0.001)and social support(t=12.15,P<0.001)were statistically significant factors.Logistic regression analysis showed that marital status(OR=0.21,95%CI:0.57-0.75,P=0.017),motor cognition(OR=1.09,95%CI:1.00-1.18,P=0.032)and social support(OR=1.28,95%CI:1.17-1.39,P<0.001)were independent influencing factors of regular exercise in elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients. Conclusions The exercise status of elderly maintenance hemodialysis patients is not adequate, since most of them do not show regular exercise behavior.Medical staff may pursue targeted exercise intervention measures for patients according to different influencing factors to help them establish regular exercise behavior.
