Conceptual definition of sarcopenia—Delphi consensus from the global leadership initiative in sarcopenia
Various societies and organizations have developed definitions of sarcopenia that are specific to different regions.Currently, there is no international consensus on the definition of sarcopenia. The Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia(GLIS)steering committee, established between 2019 and 2021,aimed to address this issue by creating a global conceptual definition of sarcopenia. From 2022 to 2023,the steering committee conducted a two-phase international Delphi study, inviting experts from major sarcopenia societies and organizations worldwide.Participants used an online survey tool(SurveyMonkey)to rank their agreement with a set of statements.A total of 107 participants from countries across 7 continents/regions completed the Delphi survey. They have developed the first global conceptual definition of sarcopenia, which includes muscle mass, muscle strength and muscle-specific strength(muscle strength/muscle size)as components, and impaired physical performance as an outcome rather than a component of sarcopenia. This international collaborative effort by the GLIS represents a significant advancement in our understanding and management of sarcopenia at a global level. The newly established conceptual definition of sarcopenia will serve as the foundation for developing an operational definition for both clinical and research purposes.
