To get a better knowledge of the flowering and secretion properties, nectar volumes and sugar contents in floral nectar of cultivated Heptapleurum heptaphyllum, this research conducted extensive field investigation in Yangshuo county and finds that Heptapleurum heptaphyllum flowers from mid-November to late January, and secretes nectar simultaneously, with the secretion period for flowers lasting for 10~11 days.Meanwhile, additional observations of protective film-covered inflorescence show that secreting glands produce nectar exclusively during the day, with the nectar volume varying in the range of 1.9~15.5 μL/flower·day,averaging out at 6.35 μL±3.27 μL/flowerday;the sugar content in nectar in the range of 8.5%~15.5%,averaging out at 11.13%±2.01%;and the daily peak traffic period of both Apis cerana cerana and Apis mellifera lasting from 11:30 to 16:00.Therefore,it follows that the cultivated Heptapleurum heptaphyllum in Yangshuo county can be able to flower normally and produce significant amounts of nectar, thus, being an important nectar-producing source in winter for local cultivators.
