An Examination of the Origins and Development of the Hui-Fen Notation Method in Guqin Reduction Notation
The Hui-Fen notation method represents an innovation in the history of the development of Guqin reduction notation.Prior to the emergence of the Hui-Fen notation method,Guqin scores expressed pitch through the intervals between hui(markers on the Guqin),whereas the Hui-Fen notation method precisely defines pitch to one-tenth of the distance between two huis.Chronologically, the invention of the Hui-Fen notation method should be dated to the late Ming dynasty or later, with previous research often citing the"Da Huan Ge Qin Pu"from 1673 as a significant turning point in the widespread application of the Hui-Fen notation method. However, this research reveals that the concept of Hui-Fen notation and the invention of the notation method likely have a more ancient history. This paper lists and analyzes instances of Hui-Fen notation that appeared in Guqin theory and scores before the"Da Huan Ge Qin Pu",attempting to examine the development and role of Hui-Jian(marker interval)notation and Hui-Fen notation, thereby revealing the reasons for the emergence of the Hui-Fen notation method and correcting the scholarly misconception about its dating.
