Effect of Exogenous Betaine on Germination of Lactua sativa L.Seeds Under High Temperature
The effect of exogenous betaine on the germination of Lactua sativa L.seeds under high temperature stress was studied by using the high temperature sensitive variety'black fungus'as experi-mental material. The results showed that the germination rate, germination index and seed vigor of Lactua sativa L.seeds treated with betaine were significantly increased under high temperature stress compared with the control.Compared with the control, the content of malondialdehyde(MDA),hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)and superoxide anion(O2·-)significantly decreased, while the content of proline(Pro)increased.Meanwhile the activities of catalase(CAT),peroxidase(POD)and superox-ide dismutase(SOD)were significantly up-regulated.These results indicated that high temperature stress led to the increase of ROS levels in Lactua sativa L.seeds and caused peroxidation reaction, thus inhibiting seed germination.Exogenous betaine could enhance the high temperature resistance of Lactua sativa L.seeds by enhancing the antioxidant system, removing ROS and accumulating Pro,thus playing a good role in seed initiation.
