"Shang Yi",a unique style of calligraphy developed by Su Shi,embodies two dimensions—"Dao"and"Art"."Art"is the accessing way and external manifestation on"Shang Yi"calligraphy of Su Shi,and his in-genuity in integrating what he heard,saw,thought,and felt into his calligraphy,and his unique style of mastering ancient methods in his creation.As the core and essence of Su Shi's"Shang Yi"calligraphy,"Dao"embodies the ambition of Confucianism to makes the whole world virtuous,and includes Lao Zhuang's natural literary and artistic views,and the Buddhist concept of emptiness and peace.Exploring Su Shi's calligraphy from the perspectives of"Dao"and"Art"can help us understand his views of life and death as well as universe in his calligraphy.By com-bining his life experience,we can appreciate the formation and changes of his calligraphy art style,and further ap-preciate the traditional Chinese spirit,theme and aesthetics that nourishes his calligraphy art.
