The process of translating Chinese novels into English is subject to various constraints.While exer-ting their intra-translation behavior,translators inevitably show their extra-translation behavior,leading to so-cialized behavior,ensuring that the translated text adapts to the new cultural context and reception environment.Based on intra-translation behavior and extra-translation behavior from the perspective of translator behavior and the variation theory of comparative literature,this paper analyzes the variations of folk language in Xuemo's novel White Tiger Pass translated by Goldblatt and Li-chun Lin.The variations in the translation are closely related to the translator's behavior at the linguistic level of"intra-translation behavior"and the social level of"extra-translation behavior".Specifically,when the translator's behavior highlights its linguistic characteristics,the form of the translation may vary,but the meaning remains unchanged.When the translator's behavior emphasizes its so-cialized characteristics,the variation in the translation is characterized by a complete departure from the original form and meaning,resulting in changes to both form and meaning.
