The Compilation of the Current Edition of Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall from the Compilation Awareness of Zen History
The"Preface of Kuang Jun(匡儁序)"to the current edition of Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall was not written during the opening time of the"Division Dijon Supervisor(分司大藏都监)"in Goryeo in the 32nd year of Emperor Gaozong's reign(1245).Its text clearly conforms to the historical context of introducing Zen Buddhism into Goryeo before long,presenting an early mature awareness of Zen history compilation in the genre of Zen historical books,such as"Denglu(灯录)".Therefore,it is impossible for it to be written in the 13th century,when books such as Jing De Chuan Deng Lu(景德传灯录)had already been widely circulated.This means that the formation of the current edition of Anthology of the Patriarchal Hall has gone through at least such four stages as"one volume edition,ten volume edition,twenty volume edition(initial engraving)and twenty volume edition(re-engraving)".
