Emperor Taizong of Tang's Prudent Amnesty Concept and Practice——On the Construction of the Tang Dynasty's Regime Legitimacy
With the continuous development and refinement of the legal system in the Tang Dynasty,the amnesty system gradually became more standardized and systematic.Various forms of amnesty,such as general amnesty,special amnesty,and prisoner review,entered a period of increasing maturity and regulation during the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang.Emperor Taizong utilized the concept of the prudent amnesty to craft the political image of a"enlightened monarch"and maximize the political function of amnesties.However,the essence of the prudent amnesty concept was to serve his practical political objectives.Taizong employed various forms of amnesty to legitimize his succession to the throne,support his strategies of foreign conquest and development,implement agricultural economic policies,and alleviate the corvée burdens on the populace.Through these amnesties,he laid the theoretical and practical foundations for the legitimacy of the Tang Dynasty's regime.
