A Study on the English Translation of Island Intangible Cultural Heritage Concepts in Zhejiang Province——Based on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Zhoushan
Island intangible cultural heritage represents the unique history, culture, and traditions of island regions. As a distinctive cultural resource, clarifying the English translation issues of concepts related to island intangible cultural heritage is significant for promoting cultural exchanges, preserving island cultural heritage, and boosting local economic growth. This paper addresses three key challenges in the English translation of island intangible cultural heritage concepts:the abundance of culturally-loaded words, the absence of cultural connotations, and vast differences in modes of expression. It proposes three principles for the English translation of these concepts:accuracy, conciseness, and consistency.Furthermore, the paper endorses a foreignization translation strategy, advocating four specific translation methods:literal translation, annotated literal translation, transliteration with category words, and annotated transliteration. These efforts aim to facilitate the international communication and dissemination of island intangible cultural heritage.
