Reginald Fleming Johnston argues that the terms "inhabitants of barren islands","grass-knit clothes",and "the Dongti people" mentioned in The Tribute of Yu,Shangshu all point to the "Zhoushan indigenous people" (the Outer Yue people). This issue has sparked considerable debate within academia, leading to diverse perspectives but no consensus. In fact, while the concept of "island barbarians" in The Tribute of Yu,Shangshu does include the "Zhoushan indigenous people",its connotation is much broader and should be attributed to the wider group known as the "Outer Yue",encompassing populations along the southeastern coast of China and parts of Southeast Asia.
