As an outstanding literary theorist in the early Stage of the School of Tongcheng,Fang Bao makes a thorough analysis of the literary achievements of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu,representatives of Tang and Song ancient literature. He believes that Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu are two most accomplished prose writers during the Tang and Song Dynasties. However, his positioning and evaluation of Han Yu's and Ouyang Xiu's writing differ greatly. He thinks that Han Yu's writing is built on the academic foundation of advocating Confucianism and criticizing heresy, inheriting the essence of"theory of righteousness"after The Historical Records, and reaching the state of"being elegant and concise",while Ouyang Xiu's writing is implicit and elegant, comprehensive and harmonious, but the effort in learning ancient proses is still in-sufficient,and there are certain flaws in the"theory of righteousness".Fang Bao's comments on the writing of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu is the result of redefining the historical status of the Eight Great Men of Let-ters of the Tang and Song Dynasties based on the standards of"theory of righteousness"and"being ele-gant and concise",which has a significant impact on later writers of the School of Tongcheng.
