Based on the case of American Indian Movement leader of the Sioux Indian Leonard Peltier,Matthiessen's book In the Spirit of Crazy Horse traces the Sioux's history of struggling for the land against the U.S.government for more than one hundred years through the eyes of Sioux Indians.Combined with the histo-ry of America's Westward Movement,it pointed out that the white elite writer, putting aside racial prejudice, gave Sioux Indians a voice who had been voiceless throughout the history,by searching materials and intervie-wing them.It condemns the U.S.government's deceit, violence, and racial discrimination against the Indi-ans,to seize land on the grounds of Manifest Destiny,by violating the spirit of contract, thus exposing the true face of a nation that prides itself as the defender of global human rights and social justice, and reflects the writer's strong sense of social responsibility and justice.
