摘要
因在华工作之需,西方传教士来到中国往往携带大量西文文献.他们建立私人或教会图书馆收藏书籍,并以所藏文献为基础翻译、刊刻和传播宗教及西学,有力推动了传教事业和中西文化交流.文章系统讨论了学界关注不多的马礼逊特藏这一新教在华的最早西文收藏:首先,梳理马礼逊西文图书馆简史和历史上产生的四部书目.其次,通过马礼逊阅读史和题签等线索复原现今藏书遗存中哪些为其原藏.最后,将马礼逊特藏与在华天主教藏书进行比较,总体评价其独特文献价值和作为新教藏书的特点.文章尝试揭示藏书与马礼逊和近代新教在华传教与学术事业的紧密联系,展现马氏西文图书馆作为中西文化交流丰厚遗产的重要价值,为清中晚期西书在华流传版图填补新教版块.
Abstract
For the needs of their work in China,Western missionaries often brought along a large amount of Western literature.They would establish private or church libraries to collect books,and use these texts as the foundation for translating,printing,and disseminating religious and Western learning,thus effectively pro-moting missionary work and cultural exchange between the East and the West.This article systematically dis-cusses the Morrison's Western library,an early collection of Protestant materials in China that has received relatively little attention in academic circles.Firstly,it outlines the brief history of the Morrison's Western library and the four catalogues that were produced in history.Secondly,by examining Morrison's reading his-tory and book inscriptions,among other clues,the article attempts to identify which books in the existing col-lection were the original part of his collection.Finally,the article compares the Morrison library with the col-lections of Catholic libraries in China,providing an overall assessment of its unique literary value and its char-acteristics as a Protestant collection.The article seeks to reveal the close connection between the collection and the missionary and academic activities of Morrison and modern Protestantism in China,showcasing the im-portant value of the Morrison's Western library as a rich legacy of Sino-Western cultural exchange,and filling a gap in the dissemination of Western books in China during the late Qing dynasty.
