In the late Qing dynasty, the foreign officers were not limited to their status as managers of the YMCA.They also played social roles such as foreign teachers, missionaries, and scholars in China.As"com-mon people",they had needs in daily life, such as food, clothing, housing and transportation. They actively adapted themselves to the local society by engaging in everyday activities such as shopping in the market,eat-ing Chinese food, taking a rickshaw, and speaking Chinese.Driven by a religious ethos, they also conducted various secular activities for Chinese people.Given that Christianity was a marginal presence in China in the late Qing dynasty, their preaching strategies employed were indirect and concealed.Their daily life is not only an integral part of the activities of Western groups in China but also a microcosm of the adjustments and inter-actions between Chinese and Western cultures.
