There were the local imperial examination families behind the competition of Tang Zhongyou and Lv Zuqian.The imperial examination families in Jinhua County could be divided into three relatively inde-pendent marriage circles:Wang(王)family,Cao family,Wang(汪)family,Shi family and Shao family as the first circle,Pan family and Ye family as the second circle,and Wu family,Tang family and He family as the third circle.Almost all families in the first two marriage circles had disciples of Lv Zuqian,and Lv Zuqian was part of the second marriage circle.Tang Zhongyou was in the third marriage circle,and the families were mentors and friends to each other.Wang Huai family was in these three marriage circles,which became the family background and reason for him to adopt a balanced strategy in the contradiction of Zhu Xi and Tang Zhongyou.The academies where Tang and Lv taught in Jinhua belonged to the Guo and Wu families respec-tively,and Guo and Wu families also had different family and marriage circles.Lv Zuqian and Tang Zhongyou belonged to different imperial examination family marriage circles in Jinhua County and Dongyang County,which could partially explain the academic competition between them.He Ji of Beishan actually happened to belong to Tang Zhongyou's family marriage circle.This was why He Ji did not follow Wu Xue and Zhu Xi's disciples in Wuzhou,but instead positioned his academic background under Huang Gan outside Wuzhou.
