STS(Science and Technology Studies;or Science,Technology and Society)is an inter-disciplinary field, which is composed of a group of disciplines, including history of science, philosophy of science, sociology of science, etc.Simply put,it is social/cultural studies of science/technology.STS in China was transitioned from the Dialectics of Nature after 1980s,and currently, many scholars of STS work in philosophy departments. The field of STS inherits some temperament of Western philoso-phy,such as the pursuit of universality, absoluteness, and certainty, and the pursuit of ultimate cause, even the only truth. Therefore, anthropology, have been accepting cultural relativism as its premise, might be a dissolve to those notions in STS.In the history of STS,a certain of scholars have been influ-enced by anthropology and have adopted anthropological methods, such as SSK(Sociology of Scientific Knowledge)and Philosophy of Scientific Practice. In the academic paradigm of STS,especially philoso-phy of science, the text is generally regarded as the top priority, while the social reality and the life expe-rience of individuals are less concerned.Anthropology,on the other hand, takes fieldwork as its basic method and the foundation of its theory. The future STS needs to face social realities and draw conceptu-al and methodological nourishment from anthropology.Nature History or Bowuology(博物学)is a new paradigm of STS,and nature history and anthropology have overlaps in methods, concepts, and objects. The intersection of disciplines is a trend, and anthropology and STS may coexist and construct each other.
