Rereading Warburg:The Neglected Construction of Image Narrative
In Warburg's iconography thought, the narrative construction of images is a theme that he has always been concerned about, and it is also a topic that has been ignored by the academic com-munity.Warburg proposed the concept of"Accessory Forms in Motion"to find the narrative hidden meaning of symbols at the edges of image details.Warburg believed that the cultural relics of the ancient world are hidden in image narratives, and this cultural relics are expressed in the form of"Emotive For-mula"and"Polarity".Warburg's image narrative exhibits the characteristics of inter-picture narrative. He uses dialogue between images to demonstrate the interactive meaning construction of image groups in the form of montage.Warburg's research presented an interdisciplinary perspective, and he attempt-ed to use all available theoretical resources to establish a research paradigm he called"Kulturwissenst-chaft."Warburg's idea of image narrative provides a new frame of reference for iconography research. It shows the mutual verification and mutual explanation relationship between different disciplines facing the same theme from a new perspective.
