Shi Hao and the Political System of the Early Southern Song Dynasty
The political landscape of the Southern Song Dynasty was complex and volatile during the transition from Emperor Gaozong's abdication to Emperor Xiaozong's enthronement. As part of the personnel arrangements laid down by Gaozong,to continue Gaozong's policies and amend the malprac-tices of Qin Hui,Shi Hao made significant political adjustments during the transition to Xiaozong's reign.Shi Hao prudently integrated the political structures of both reigns.Advocating for a balanced ap-proach between war and peace,he introduced the concept of resting the army, nurturing the populace, and preserving the fundamental territory of Jiangzhe. His political ideal, characterized by roundedness and coherence without losing discipline, embodied the"middle way".This approach had a far-reaching impact on the politics of the early Southern Song Dynasty.
