The Impact of Polycentric Spatial Structure in Urban Agglomerations on Knowledge Spillover
This article empirically tests the impact of the polycentric spatial structure of urban ag-glomerations on knowledge spillover using data from patent cooperation applications between cities from 2003 to 2021.The study shows that the formation of the polycentric spatial structure of urban ag-glomerations makes the economic connections within the urban agglomerations closer, which helps to promote knowledge spillover between cities within the urban agglomerations. However, this effect var-ies depending on the level of the urban agglomerations. The promotion effect of the polycentric spatial structure of urban agglomerations on knowledge spillover between cities within the first level urban ag-glomerations is stronger than that within the second and third level urban agglomerations. In addition, mechanism analysis shows that the polycentric spatial structure of urban agglomerations promotes knowledge spillover between cities within the urban agglomerations by expanding opportunities for en-terprise selection and strengthening urban collaborative division of labor. The above conclusion is of great significance for accelerating the development of multi center urban agglomerations, breaking down market and administrative barriers that hinder urban connectivity, and promoting the integration process of urban agglomerations.
