The Application and Re-evaluation of"Zomia"——A Prospective of"Positionality"
This study presents how current scholars view and challenge Scott's concept of"Zo-mia",and explores the reflexive knowledge derived from this concept through the notion of"Positional-ity".The research finds that Chinese academic texts examine this term from two aspects:as an object of research and as a knowledge production space. The former validates the"Zomia"theory through single case studies, questioning the historical narrative centered on opposition between highlands and low-lands.The latter focuses on critically assessing the knowledge contributions and defects of the"Zomia"in terms of research interests, disciplinary perspectives, values, and methodologies. To promote the ac-cumulation of reflexive knowledge, this article highlights a key concept—"positionality",frequently mentioned in the book"The Art of Not Being Government",which aids in re-examining the imbalanced analysis of the"whole"and the"part"within this book. Moreover,by uncovering the latent knowledge clues of"structure"and"agency",this concept helps to delineate a common theme:how actors seek a"strategic position"that can provide them with more living space within structural constraints.
