Alienation and Resonance:On the Cultural Dimension of Rosa's Critique of Modern Society
From the dimension of social structure,"acceleration"is grasped as the cause of"new alienation",and the construction of"post-growth society"is regarded as the solution to overcome new alienation. This is the mainstream interpretation of Rosa's new alienation theory.Although this under-standing clearly clarifies Rosa's structural diagnosis of new alienation as a disease of modern society,it also obscures his cultural diagnosis of the disease of new alienation.Only by fully understanding the cul-tural dimension of Rosa's critique of modern society can we fully grasp the whole idea of his critical theory and fully understand his treatment of"new alienation".In fact, according to Rosa, new alien-ation is not only a"structural disease"caused by"acceleration",but also a"cultural disease"caused by modern society's one-sided conception of the"good life".In the cultural treatment of new alienation,Rosa draws on the theoretical resources of phenomenology to achieve a new understanding of the human being, advocating a new conception of the good life that focuses on the quality of relationships, with a view to transforming the relationship between the human being and the world so as to bring about a mu-tual resonance between the two.
