The Intersection of Recognition Theory and Genealogy:On an Integrated Critical Scheme
Since the beginning of modern philosophy, the critical traditions of Germany and France have been notable, with the Frankfurt School in Germany upholding the method of"immanent critique",and philosophers such as Foucault in France using the genealogical method of critique.Nowa-days,Honneth,who is the third generation scholar of Frankfurt School, has gradually incorporated ge-nealogical method into his theory of recognition in the process of dialogue and confrontation between the two traditions. This combination provides us with new perspectives for reshaping or continuing a contemporary critical social theory.Through the examination of recognition theory and genealogy,we find that both theories have their own strengths and weaknesses, which provides an opportunity for the possibility and necessity of their integration.Importantly, under the conditions of genealogy,recogni-tion theory's examination of norms presents the characteristics and advantages of"diagnosis-critique-emancipation",which not only broadens its explanatory strength of social phenomena, but also releases its critical and emancipatory potential.
