Coherence or Separation in Romance and Marriage:A Choice Experimental Study of Young People's Preferences
The perspectives on romance and marriage among China's younger generation are undergoing a profound transformation, with the traditional coherence between romance and marriage gradually being disrupted. The divergence in preferences for romance and marriage has emerged as a critical factor driving the separation between the two.Using a choice experiment, this study analyzes 6825 observations from 431 unmarried young individuals, revealing both the commonalities and differences in their preferences for romance and marriage. The findings indicate that young people generally hold positive attitudes toward romance and marriage under unconstrained conditions.Their preferences for romance and marriage demonstrate both coherence and divergence, reflecting a coexistence of romantic-marital coherence and separation.Family background, physical appearance, and value alignment are shared influencing factors in both contexts. However, preferences diverge as emotional fulfillment is prioritized in romantic relationships, whereas economic stability and housing security are emphasized in marital choices.Gender, prior romantic experiences, and other individual attributes further contribute to variations in preferences across different groups. This study offers an analytical framework to better understand the decision-making mechanisms and evolving patterns of young people transitioning from romance to marriage.
