A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study on the Characteristics of the Development of Marathons in China,Japan and the United States
Using the methods of textual analysis and fieldwork,and based on the cultural value dimensions of collectiv-ism and individualism,this paper analyze and compare the cultural characteristics of the development of marathons in China,Japan and the United States.The results show that American marathon culture centers on individualism and has developed consumer runners who pay attention to participation and leisure.Based on the spirit of"Wa"with insti-tutional collectivism as the core,Japanese marathon culture has developed the ekiden that emphasizes group competi-tion.Chinese marathon culture has developed running groups with parakinship and a unique fashion of creative run-ning by fusing in-group collectivism and traditional culture.Mass media and new sports-social media have played a pivotal role in the development of marathons in the three countries.Based on the development experience of marathons in the United States and Japan,combined with the development of contemporary Chinese marathons,the future Chi-nese marathons should attach importance to the development of marathons with more Chinese characteristics,to fur-ther promote the industrialization,localization and popularization of Chinese marathons.
