Value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the pathogenetic diagnosis of severe pneumonia
Objective To investigate the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing(mNGS)in pathogenetic diagnosis of patients with severe pneumonia. Methods Sixty patients with severe pneumonia admitted to Ningbo Urology and Nephrology Hospital between May 2021 and May 2023 were collected.Their 5-10 mL of alveolar lavage fluid was collected for routine testing and mNGS testing. The positive rate of pathogenic microorganisms determined by mNGS and routine tests were compared. Results The pathogen positive rate determined by mNGS testing was 81.67%,significantly higher than the 58.33%from conventional testing(P=0.002).The bacterial positive rate via the mNGS testing was 53.33%,also significantly higher than the 35.00%of the conventional testing(P=0.005).The fungi and virus positive rates determined by mNGS testing(36.67%and 21.67%,respectively)were also remarkably higher than the conventional testing(20.00%and 8.33%,respectively)(P=0.005,0.011).Conclusion mNGS shows good diagnostic value in the etiology of severe pneumonia, with a positive diagnostic rate, and is worthy of clinical reference.
