Comparison of hospital stay length and costs between hypofractionated and conventional radiotherapy for patient with breast cancer
Objective To compare the length of hospital stay and costs between hypofractionated and conventional radiotherapy modes for patients with breast cancer following breast-conserving surgery. Methods A total of 612 patients with breast cancer of pathological stages T1-4N0-3M0,who underwent breast-conserving surgery in Zhejiang Cancer Hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were included in the study.Patients received radiotherapy following breast-conserving surgery, including 127 cases with hypofractionated radiotherapy and 485 cases with conventional radiotherapy.Using the propensity score matching method,121 pairs of patients were successfully matched. The length of hospital stay, total hospitalization costs, and various sub-item costs were compared between two groups. Results The median length of hospital stay for the conventional radiotherapy group was longer[7.00(5.00,8.00)d vs.6.00(5.00,7.00)d,P<0.05]and the total hospitalization costs were higher[35 509.47(33 379.65,37 247.48)yuan vs.25 670.90(21 303.77,26 445.84)yuan,P<0.05]than those for hypofractionated radiotherapy group. In addition, the sub-item costs of comprehensive medical services, diagnostic fees, treatment fees, traditional Chinese medicine fees, consumable fees, etc.in the hypofractionated radiotherapy group were lower than those in the conventional radiotherapy group(P<0.05).Conclusion Hypofractionated radiotherapy can shorten the postoperative radiotherapy course, reduce hospitalization time, and decrease treatment costs, thereby reducing hospitalization expenses of patients.
