The role and consideration of nurses in the management of home enteral nutrition of cancer patients
Home enteral nutrition refers to the delivery of nutrient solution through the gastrointestinal tract to patients with stable conditions but unable to meet their nutritional needs.It can improve the nutritional status of patients and enhance their quality of life,and is an important component of nutritional support for cancer patients.Patients and caregivers are important implementers of home enteral nutrition,but often experience energy intake failure or interruption of enteral nutrition due to improper operation,insufficient awareness of complications,and other issues.Long-term monitoring and management by nutrition support teams are needed.Although there is evidence-based medicine to provide reference for home enteral nutrition management of cancer patients,localized practical verification is still needed.As an important member of the team managing home enteral nutrition for cancer patients,nurses play the role of coordinating communicators,educators,researchers,and ethical decision-makers,thereby promoting communication and coordination among teams,strengthening patient health education,and ensuring the smooth progress of home enteral nutrition management for cancer patients.This article delves into the concept and essence of home enteral nutrition,emphasizing the role and considerations of nurses in managing home enteral nutrition,aiming to offer insights for nurses to better contribute to the management of home enteral nutrition for cancer patients.
