The Impact of Digitalization in Rural Counties on Rural Labor Supply
This study investigates the impact of rural digital development on rural labor supply in Chinese counties, drawing on data from the 2018-2020 County Digital Rural Index,China Family Panel Studies, and CEIC Economic Database.Employing a fixed-effects model, the analysis explores changes in rural labor supply, focusing on the dual perspective of the quantity of labor sup-ply and the timing of labor supply.Key findings reveal that firstly, rural digitalization significantly enhances the rural labor supply by increasing flexibility in work location and workplace, and has ef-fectively increased the probability of part-time conversion of surplus rural labor.Secondly, digital development reallocates work-leisure time, increasing working hours by converting leisure into non-farm employment time.Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis reveals that rural digitization has a greater impact on the time of labor supply for women, new generation and low-skilled rural labor-ers.These insights emphasis the potential of digital initiatives to foster the coordinated growth of common wealth and digital rural infrastructure.
