This paper analyzes the characteristics of national and provincial trunk highway maintenance and the problems such as insufficient funds and inadequate management under the current passive maintenance mode,and introduces the concept of sustainable development and the concept of sustainable road network into the maintenance of national and provincial trunk highways. It proposes to reasonably design and formulate annual maintenance plans and schemes according to the remaining service life of section,health condition,maintenance quantity and maintenance funds,etc.,and optimize the maintenance funds and highway performance with multi-objective decision-making optimization method,so as to effectively improve the utilization rate of maintenance funds and the balance between the annual highway maintenance quantity.
