Growth and physiological traits of seedlings of five species of the genus Catalpa in response to N
[Objective]The analysis aims to compare the differences in growth and physiological traits of seedlings among five species of the Catalpa under nitrogen application. It intends to provide a basis for the research and practical production of fast-growing and high-yielding forests of the Catalpa.[Method]Seedlings of five species of Catalpa Scop.were cultivated with two nitrogen levels(2 g nitrogen application and no nitrogen application)to investigate the response of the growth and several physiological characters to different level of nitrogen.[Result]The biomass of five species improved significantly with the high level of the nitrogen treatment. However, the response of nitrogen was different between species, the response of C.ovata to nitrogen was the highest, with a net increase of 29.633 g·plant-1,C.bignonioides was in the second place, followed by C.bungei C.A.Mey,C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm and C.fargesii Bur.f.duclouxii(Dode)Gilmour.The biomass of C.bungei C.A.Mey and C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm were higher in both the two level of nitrogen,C.bignonioides was lower. The chlorophyll content,Fv/Fm and root activity were significantly increased, however, the NR of leafage was significantly decreased. The response of different species of C.Scop.to different characters was diverse. The difference of chlorophyll's response to nitrogen may be an important reason for the difference of biomass response.Based on the entropy weight method, the comprehensive evaluation values of the five tree species under two treatments, nitrogen application and control, were as follows:under nitrogen application, the comprehensive evaluation values from highest to lowest are as follows:C.ovata G.Don>C.bungei C.A.Mey>C.bignonioides>C.fargesii Bur.f.duclouxii(Dode)Gilmour>C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm.Under the control condition, the comprehensive evaluation values from highest to lowest were as follows:C.bignonioides>C.bungei C.A.Mey>C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm>C.ovata G.Don>C.fargesii Bur.f.duclouxii(Dode)Gilmour.[Conclusion]Under the two levels of nitrogen application, the biomass of the five tree species was ranked as follows:C.bungei C.A.Mey>C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm>C.fargesii Bur.f.duclouxii(Dode)Gilmour>C.ovata G.Don>C.bignonioides;The responses of different tree species to nitrogen were significantly different. The comprehensive analysis found that the responses of the five tree species to nitrogen were in descending order:C.bignonioides>C.ovata G.Don>C.speciosa(Barney)Engelm>C.bungei C.A.Mey>C.fargesii Bur.f.duclouxii(Dode)Gilmour.
