Diversity analysis of leaf phenotypic traits in 50 camellias species
[Objective]This study is to provide a theoretical basis for genetic improvement and taxonomic identification of camellia germplasm resources.[Method]The leaf phenotypic trait index of 50 camellias species were determined, and the analysis was carried out by using image feature analysis, correlation analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis.[Result]1)Based on the values of leaf area and leaf circumference, the leaves of 50 camellias were preliminarily divided into three types:large, medium, and small, among them, medium leaves(52%)accounted for the majority, followed by small leaves(32%)and large leaves(16%);2)According to the aspect ratio, roundness, and circumference ratio, the leaf shape was divided into four categories:elliptical(42%)>oval(38%)>oblong(12%)>lanceolate(8%),so the leaf shape is mainly elliptical followed by oval, and a few were oblong and lanceolate;3)Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant negative correlation between the circumference ratio and leaf area, leaf circumference, roundness, and aspect ratio(P<0.01);There was a significant positive correlation between leaf area, leaf circumference, roundness, and aspect ratio(P<0.01);4)Extracting two principal components, with a cumulative contribution rate of 97.688%,it was supposed that leaf phenotypic traits can be a classification criteria for camellia;5)The variation range of leaf traits of 50 camellias were 18.391%-52.157%,ranked as leaf area>leaf circumference>width to length ratio>circumference to diameter ratio>roundness; The diversity index(H)ranges from 1.702-1.925,with the highest H value(1.925)for the leaf area;6)Finally,based on cluster analysis, the 50 Camellias could be divided into four groups:group I was medium-sized oval leaves;Group II consisted of large oval or large elliptical leaves;Group III was small elliptical leaves, and group IV was small lanceolate leaves.[Conclusion]After long-term natural hybridization and artificial cultivation,Camellia not only appeared variations in flower phenotypes, but also have certain variations in leaf phenotypes, and the variations have corresponded regularly, which can provide a solid theoretical basis for the classification and identification of camellia plants in the later stage.
