Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide(ERCO2)to produce polycarbonate compounds with high energy density has become a hot research topic recently.Among the catalysts for ERCO2,Cu-based materials exhibited high selectivity for C2 compounds such as ethanol due to their strong adsorption to intermediate CO.Herein the mechanism of ERCO2 reaction and common reactor types were introduced first, then the recent progress of the 5 typical Cu-based catalysts, including single-atom catalysts, metal oxides,metal-organic frameworks, alloys and non-metal modified materials,of selective ERCO2 to produce ethanol were summarized. And the strategies to design high efficiency Cu-based catalysts such as defect engineering, morphology control, facet engineering and their synergistic effects were discussed. Finally, the challenges encountered and further development for highly efficient ERCO2 catalysts to produce ethanol were prospected.
