A Study on Private School Institutions in Zhaoqing Prefecture in Ming Dynasty
The Ming Dynasty attached great importance to education and actively advocated the establish-ment of private school institutions in urban and rural communities throughout the country. In the Ming Dynasty, there were mainly two kinds of private learning institutions in Zhaoqing Prefecture, which were noted by local historians and scholars. One was social school initiated by local officials and the other one is the township school or family school founded by the village, joint village or local clan and squire. Most of the tutors were government officials,or those who devoted themselves to academic work and did not seek official employment,or poor stu-dents and children who had set up schools before them,as well as senior students who had failed after many at-tempts.
