The Presupposition of Metaphorical Sentence and Its Dynamic Semantics
In order to express non-literal meaning, metaphorical sentences require certain underlying contextual information, and such information have no essential difference from the presuppositions of literal expressions. However, compared to the presuppositions of literal expressions, the presuppositions of metaphors are more complex.Even the simplest forms of metaphorical statements involve different types of presuppositions, and these presuppositions lie between semantic presuppositions and pragmatic presuppositions. They have a relatively fixed form but are highly context-dependent and require dynamic analysis.By distinguishing the presuppositions used in a metaphorical sentences into two categories:metaphorical conceptual presuppositions and source properties property presuppositions, and explaining the hierarchical difference between these two types of presuppositions, the differences between meta-phorical presuppositions and general presuppositions regarding projectivity and cancelability can be explained. Then following the tradition of dynamic se-mantics,a unified approach is proposed to bridge the surface sentence structure and deep cognitive structures, allowing us to characterize the projection of the two types of presuppositions in different scenarios and reveal the metaphorical semantics in dynamic contexts.
