The Change of Fitness's Measure:From Reproduction to Survival
Fitness is a central concept in Evolutionary Biology.Generally, reproduction is regarded as its measure, which means that whether an organ-ism's evolution is success depends on how many offspring it has.In Bouchard's view, this definition cannot account for the adaptive changes of the qua-king aspen, clonal organisms, and symbionts. These adaptive changes are obtained through slow accumulation of changes among the parts of the biological system not through reproduction. In Persistence Through Time,Bouchard has suggested that fitness needs some adjusting. The measure of fitness ought to be persistence rather than reproduction.Reproduction is regarded as one of bilolgical systems'survival strategies.
