Exploring the Development of Synthetic Biology through the Lens of Bertalanffy's Organismic Theory
The rise of synthetic biology has taken the exploration of the essence of life to a new era.By applying engineering principles and using both"bot-tom-up"and"top-down"methods,it aims to re-understand and design life. This challenges the traditional"analytical"approach in life science,intro-ducing a"decomposition& integration"method and initiating a new chapter in"build life".However, this approach did not come out of nowhere,it has a tradition of paradigms. It continues Bertalanffy's organismic approach of"reduction and system"and develops it into a paradigm of the"decomposition & in-tegration".To better elucidate the methodological characteristics of synthetic biology and its unique conception of life,it is necessary to revisit the Bertalan-ffy's organism theory and explore how the"reduction and system"method implied in his organism theory can provide insight into understanding synthetic life.Additionally, his philosophical reflections and value concerns on the boundaries of life also provide insights for the development of synthetic biology.
