The Grand History of Microorganisms:The Dissemination and Application of Bacterial Knowledge in Modern China(1866-1919)
Under the tide of modern western medicine spreading into China, western bacteriology emerged as a breakthrough development of the late 19th century and intersected with Chinese society and traditional Chinese medicine. The transmission of bacteriological knowledge to China was introduced to China by various social groups including missionaries, intellectuals,as well as systematically disseminated and promoted by governmental entities such as the Qing dynasty and Republic of China administrations.During the nascent period of the Republic of China, localization of bacteriology was initially real-ized,and then swiftly permeated through various strata of Chinese society. The propagation and application of bacteriological understanding in modem Chi-na followed a sequential trajectory encompassing translation, introduction, dissemination, practical application, and endorsement. This process not only reshaped perceptions of health and disease prevention but also deepened local comprehension of bacteriology and health sciences. Moreover,it catalyzed discussion surrounding modem scientific discourse, traditional Chinese medicine, and the interface between Eastern and Western medical methodologies, thereby engendering pivotal shifts within the socio-cultural fabric of modern China.
