Optogenetics and the Issue of Personal Identity from the Perspective of Memory Enhancement
Optogenetics,with its comprehensive impact on memory,emerges as one of the most promising memory enhancement technologies.The memory enhancement brings a re-examination of personal identity through its transformative effects on mental states,character,and actions.This study,from the perspective of memory enhancement,decodes the interplay between optogenetics and personal identity across four dimensions:time,existence,social in-teraction and self-narrative.It reveals that personal identity is fluid and processual,influenced by both subjective and objective experiences.Optogenet-ics directly affects specific memory types and the emotions attached to memories,influencing the definition of self and the relationship between self and the world.The study provides effective recommendations for assessing the acceptability of using optogenetics for memory enhancement and furthers the bounda-ry research on memory enhancement.
