A Comment on Bruno Latour's Reshaping of Gaia Theory
"Gaia"is a metaphorical representation of the Earth Goddess by James Lovelock in the sense of geobiology, emphasizing the"steady state"characteristic. With the expansion of the Anthropocene and frequent ecological crises,Gaia no longer possesses the"steady state"function of self-regu-lation.As a consequence,Latour updated it as a secular actor that transcends mythological colors and reshaped Gaia's theory from a non-modernity per-spective to break through the dichotomy of modernity, ultimately proposing a path to confront crises:down to earth.Latour's Gaia theory provides us with new solutions for facing ecological crises, but it has an unstable mythological stance, unconscious conceptual confusion, and idealistic and romantic imagi-nation,which cannot transcend ecological crises from the root. Therefore,it is urgent to place"Gaia"in the perspective of Ecological Marxism and ex-plore its theoretical limitations in the logic of capital, enriching Gaia's theoretical connotation on the basis of a harmonious coexistence of human and na-ture in the community of life, and providing ideological reference for appropriately facing ecological crises.
