Effect of Different Steering Approaches on Gliding Performance of Cruciform Parachute
In order to expand the application of cruciform parachute and improve the gliding per-formance of cruciform parachutes, the effect of different steering approaches on the gliding perform-ance of cruciform parachute was studied numerically. One steering method was reefing the cables to some extent to form the air-venting corner such that cruciform parachute could be steered. The other method was changing the geometrical porosity of the canopy,i.e.,by installing a bleed air spoiler on the canopy surface and changing the deflection angle to steer the parachute. The simulation re-sults showed that the reefing extent of the cables had a significant impact on the pitch angle of the parachute, which could reach 2°at most. While the deflection angle of the bleed air spoiler had a significant impact on the lateral force of the parachute, when the deflection angle reached 30°,the lateral force reached its maximum at 47.3N.It is demonstrated that both steering approaches are ef-fective for the gliding performance of the cruciform parachute.
