Investigation on Low-velocity Impact Damage and Characteristics of Compression after Impact of Thick-/thin-ply Composite Laminates
Comparing with the traditional thick layer carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites, the thin layer composites have obvious damage inhibition effect and better mechanical properties. Two kinds of thick/thin hybrid laminates were derived by using discrete and aggregation embedment methods based on thick-ply laminate, which were used to study the damage degree and distribution characteristics of composite structures under low energy impact loads,as well as the residual com-pression properties after impact. The delamination damage morphologies of three types of composite laminates with impact damage were revealed by ultrasonic C-scan and thermal peeling experiments, and the damage size was quantified. The experimental results showed that the"discrete"and"ag-gregate"modes of thin layer embedding into thick layer made full use of the damage suppression effect of thin layer composite, the centrosymmetric distribution of layered damage and the distribu-tion position of characteristic layered damage along the thickness direction were changed, and the re-sidual compression performance of composite laminates was improved.
