Study on Resource-based Industry and Urban Development in the Urumqi-Changji Region, China
Resource-based industry based on energy sources is an important power driving force for development of industry. Resource-based industry also has obvious impetus to the urban development which is at its peak period. So a study of relationships between resource-based industry and urban development is conducted in this paper. The studied area includes Urumqi and seven cities which are located in Changji Huizu Autonomous Prefecture. Different mathematic methods were applied for data analyses: method of industrial structure evolution, changes of industrial structure entropy and location entropy. In this paper, resource-based industry is used as a single influencing factor, and a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods is adopted to conduct in-depth analysis of industrial development of its resource-based characteristics. Results showed that resource-based industries in the Urumqi-Changji region had a significant impact on the direction of industrial clustering, the type of the internal structure of industrial and urban expansion methods and spatial structure. Resource-based industries in the region promote the expansion of city size, affected by the dispersion of oasis city, the impact of the spatial structure of its performance is the simultaneous axial expansion and circlular expansion, urban expansion of the Urumqi-Changji region is predominantly to the suburbs and neighboring cities, transformation of industry also chose the nearest city. For the cities and counties faraway, aggregation predominates dispersion, cities and towns had a weak radiation.
