Using maps for reference or writing on maps is a phenomenon peculiar to the literature of the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern dynasties,which conforms to the growing academic development trend of historiography and its affiliated geography from the late Han onwards.As one of the most important geographical documents of contemporary history,maps of each era integrate time and space,images and words,technology and art.They are closely associated not only with historical geography,but also with many literary themes,such as the metropolis,landscape and travel.During this period of time,the influence of maps on literature is manifested in the following ways Firstly,the elements,ideas and methods of map drawing have infiltrated into the writing mode,content form,and language system of literary works from time to time.Secondly,the authentic and sophisticated graphic materials carried by the map have repeatedly constituted the source of knowledge and the basis for verification of literary creation,giving birth to an undercurrent of literary style that advocates truth and admires truthfulness.In addition to the technical and instrumental aspects,the aesthetic attributes and symbolic meanings contained in maps can also arouse the imagination of literati.Therefore the use of maps for the expression of aesthetic and metaphorical thinking enriches and enhances the expressiveness of literature.The afore-mentioned triple influence of map making,viewing,and imagination played a significant role in the evolution of literature between the Han and Tang Dynasties.
