Is Tarski's Theory of Truth a Kind of Correspondence Theories of Truth?
Is Tarski's theory of truth a kind of correspondence theories of truth?This is a controversial issue.Correspondence theories of truth share two common characteristics:First,they try to find the essence or substance of"truth".Second,they presuppose real-ism,and the essence or substance of"truth"consist in the correspondence with the reality.This paper compares Tarski's theory of truth with the characteristics of correspondence theories of truth.Then we point out that both of the two conceptions,T-schema and the definition of truth in terms of satisfaction,which are the core ideas of Tarski's theory of truth,do not express the two common characteristics of correspondence theories of truth.The meaning of the T-schema is that truth is used to characterize the semantics.The def-inition of truth in terms of satisfaction is used to find out the extension of truth rather than the essence of truth.Therefore,Tarski's theory of truth is not a kind of correspondence theories of truth.
